Some employees wish to breastfeed directly during the workday, either by visiting an on-site child care center, a caregiver bringing the child to the worksite, or by leaving the worksite to visit the child in a nearby location. Some mothers are unable to express milk with a pump, some babies are unable to drink from a bottle, and still others find that direct breastfeeding is more efficient than milk expression through a pump. The U.S. Breastfeeding Committee recommends that the Department encourages employers to allow employees direct access to their babies where the worksite can safely accommodate it. This is in alignment with The Surgeon General's Call to Action 15 to: "Expand the use of programs in the workplace that allow lactating mothers to have direct access to their babies."
